Efflorescence: Who's to blame?
I am often asked "Who is responsible for the disfiguring white marks on the surface of the tiling?" This question usually comes with the inferred question; "and who is going to pay to fix it?"
Working out why the efflorescence appeared is not normally as difficult as it would seem, because we know what causes it. Clearly apportioning blame is more difficult. Prevention is better than cure, so this article goes into how to minimise efflorescence by designing it out. But before we go into that, the problem of efflorescence needs some defining.
