Brief History of Tilers WA
The Ceramic Wall & Floor Tilers Association was formed during a meeting of tilers that was sponsored by the Tile Merchants Association, now know as the Australian Tile Council of W.A. More than 300 tilers attended the meeting which was held at the Italian Club in Northbridge in September 1993.
A committee was established with Neil McBroom as President, Neville Davis as secretary and Gordon Dimbleby was the inaugural treasurer. Mr Henry Morgan of Morgan's Adhesives contributed the sum of $1000.00 to be used as seed funds to allow the formation of the Association. The Association was incorporated on the 5th July 1994.
The major rationale for establishing and continuing the Ceramic Wall & Floor Tilers Association was to ensure that tilers were made aware of the introduction of the Australian Standards 3958, 1 & 2 which had been approved and accepted by the industry in 1991 and updated in 1994 with further upgrading to the waterproofing standard AS 3740.2004 in 2004.
Training courses were introduced with financial assistance from the Building and Construction Industry Training Fund levy. Following the initial training, a system for registration of tilers was introduced to provide consumers with access to tilers who had sufficient skills to carry out their day to day tasks. Courses on the standards, costing and quoting, estimating, consumer and contract law and practical sessions were ongoing. Assessment was undertaken on site using recognition of prior learning processes and practical demonstration of work. Quotation and variation books were produced to assist members when quoting and carrying out the work.
So what's happened 10 years on?
So what's happened 10 years on? Training continued throughout the year. In partnership with the Australian Tile Council, the Tile Show at City West was a show piece to consumers of up to date tiles and tilers. The AGM to August 2004 brought in a clean sweep to the association with a new committee. The move has invigorated the association and again presented in November the WA Tile Industry Awards 2004 for the second year. The event was a great success with the Hon Nick Griffiths MLC representing the Government of WA and the Hon Ray Halligan MLC representing the opposition were present, to congraduate the winners and encourage excellence to the tilelaying industry.
